Hornbeam

Hornbeam wood does not have a colored heartwood, it has a uniform color and structure. The wood is gray-white or yellowish-white. The annual growths have a strongly wavy course, the trunk is also strongly wavy. Hornbeam has very thin and smooth bark with a gray color. The share of bark is only 7%. Hornbeam wood is very heavy, hard and difficult to split, not resistant to weather conditions. Hornbeam wood is mainly used for elements of machines and tools, which require high resistance to friction, impact, splitting. Hornbeam is, next to beech, one of the best species for a fireplace. It has practically only advantages: very high density, very thin bark, relatively quick drying. It has less splitting than beech. It is the most desirable species of wood for a fireplace.

Oak

Oak is a ring-vascular species, in practice this means very good visibility of annual growth rings in the cross-section. Oak wood has a distinct heartwood colored brown, the sapwood is narrow and relatively light. Oak wood emits a specific vinegar smell when fresh. Oak has very thick and cracked bark of a dark gray color. The share of bark is over 20%. Oak bark is somewhat similar to ash, elm, maple and poplar. The industrial use of oak wood is very wide, including veneers, furniture (including parquets, stairs), ships, machines and others. Oak wood is a very durable raw material. Oak is a valuable and sought-after raw material for industry. It is heavy and calorific wood but at the same time has a number of disadvantages: it dries very slowly, has thick bark, is difficult to chop. Purchasing oak can be a good investment if it is already seasoned or if we can afford to season it for longer than a year.
